Do You Need to Be Fit for Adventure Activities in the Scottish Highlands?
It’s one of the most common questions we get asked:
“Do I need to be fit to go Canyoning?”
“What if I’m not particularly sporty?”
“Will I be able to do the Via Ferrata?”
If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re fit enough for an adventure activity, you’re definitely not alone.
The good news is that most people are far more capable than they think.

The Biggest Myth About Adventure Activities
Many people assume adventure activities are only for ultra-fit outdoor enthusiasts.
You know the type:
- Running mountain marathons
- Climbing every weekend
- Owning more outdoor gear than they know what to do with
The reality is very different. Most of the people joining our trips are ordinary people on holiday, looking for a fun day out with friends, family or colleagues. Many have never tried anything like it before. Adventure activities aren’t about being the fastest or strongest person in the group. They’re about stepping outside your comfort zone, trying something new and having a great time.
What Kind of Fitness Do You Actually Need?
The answer depends on the activity, but for most people a reasonable level of general fitness is enough.
If you can:
- Walk for a few hours
- Climb a few flights of stairs
- Enjoy being active outdoors
Then there’s a good chance you’ll be able to enjoy many adventure activities.
You don’t need to train specifically before your holiday and you certainly don’t need any specialist skills or previous experience.
What About Canyoning?
Canyoning often looks more intimidating than it actually is.
People see photos of jumps, waterfalls and narrow gorges and assume it’s only suitable for experienced adventurers. In reality, our guides are there to support you every step of the way.
Many first-timers are surprised by how quickly they build confidence once they’re in the water. The biggest challenge is often mental rather than physical.
It’s usually not about whether your body can do it, it’s about convincing your brain that you can.

What About Scotland’s Only Via Ferrata?
The Via Ferrata is often the activity people are most nervous about. The rungs, bridges and exposure can look daunting from the photos but once again, it’s not a race and it’s not a competition.
The route is designed to be completed at your own pace, and our guides are there to help throughout the experience. In fact, many guests who arrive worried about heights leave saying they can’t believe they managed it.
The feeling of achievement at the end is often what people remember most.
Fitness vs Confidence
One thing we’ve learned over the years is that confidence usually has a bigger impact than fitness.
We’ve seen:
- Nervous participants surprise themselves
- Parents outperform their teenagers
- People who nearly cancelled their booking end up having the best day of the group
Adventure has a funny way of helping people realise they’re capable of more than they thought.
It’s Okay to Be Nervous
A lot of people worry they’re going to hold the group back. The truth is that everyone starts somewhere.
Our guides are used to working with people of all ages, abilities and confidence levels. The goal isn’t to prove anything, it’s to enjoy the experience.
You don’t need to arrive feeling fearless. You just need to arrive willing to give it a go.

So, Do You Need to Be Fit?
In most cases, no.
You don’t need to be an athlete, a climber or an experienced outdoor enthusiast.
You simply need a willingness to try something new and an openness to stepping slightly outside your comfort zone.
The vast majority of guests finish their adventure saying the same thing:
“That wasn’t nearly as difficult as I thought it would be.”
And usually followed closely by:
“When can we do it again?”
